BASIC FUNCTION
The function of the Equipment Operator 1 position is to perform a variety of duties associated with road construction and maintenance activities on the County of Wellington‘s road system, involving driving truck, operating a variety of construction and maintenance equipment, performing labourer activities and operating snowplow equipment on winter shifts.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Driving truck, operating a variety of construction and maintenance equipment, performing labourer activities, and operating snowplow equipment on winter shifts.
- Report equipment breakdowns and poor performance to the Roads Supervisor.
- Patrol roads and record data on road conditions and report back to the Roads Supervisor.
- Ensure that all work performed is carried out with good workmanship, safely and that the desired outcomes are achieved.
- Provide labourer functions pertaining to activities such as sign maintenance, road construction, traffic control, tree cutting, culvert maintenance, roadside debris pickup, asphalt patching, and grass cutting.
- Investigate public concerns regarding the maintenance of the County road system as advised, and to report the problem to the Roads Supervisor.
- Provide the public with prompt, courteous service to road maintenance problems as directed by the Roads Supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma.
- Minimum two years of experience or equivalent in road maintenance and construction, preferably in a municipal setting.
- Working knowledge of the operation of a variety of light trucks, six tonne snowplows, and agricultural and construction equipment.
- Working knowledge of all Occupational Health and Safety and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System regulations.
- First Aid training preferred.
- A valid driver’s licence Class D with Z endorsement and a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
- Participation in the Roads On-call Rotation required; must be able to report to the job site within approximately 30 minutes of the callout.
Pay Range: $66,331.20 - $77,584.00 (2025 Non-Union Compensation Grid)

Pension: Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS); enrolment mandatory.
Medical Responsibility Time: Prorated and accrues at 0.5 days/month. Short Term Disability: 17 weeks coverage at 75% or 100% of pay, based on length of service.
Vacation: Accrues to start at three weeks/annum; increases based on length of service.
Mileage: If applicable, as per CRA allowances.
