BASIC FUNCTION
The Site Assistant’s role is to assist the Site Attendant in processing customers wishing to dispose of waste and recyclable materials at the County’s landfill site and transfer stations. This position includes regular outdoor work activities, such as litter picking, sweeping, and snow shoveling as well as monitoring recycling and garbage bins, keeping the tires, scrap metal and electronics tidy and stacked, and ensuring smooth and safe site operations. This position also provides coverage for the Site Attendant when needed by operating the scale, assessing and collecting tipping fees and communicating with customers.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Effectively communicate with the public operational needs and policies for the sites as well as provide education to customers as to the importance of disposing of their materials according to the guidelines in place.
- Answer questions and provide assistance and education to customers disposing of materials as required.
- Assist in managing unhappy or non-complying customers.
- Perform physical outdoor work around the site including lifting, stacking, loading and other tasks as required.
- Maintain litter control and general housekeeping around buildings, containers and the site in general.
- Assist with extra litter picking when needed such as in the spring time or after a wind storm or other extreme weather.
- Perform all necessary outdoor duties including working in extreme heat or cold weather when required.
- Monitor recycling bins to determine proper sorting of diverted materials and remove contaminated materials.
- Stack electronics recycling in the proper bins.
- Ensure appliances with refrigerant are kept tidy for easier refrigerant removal.
- Assist in loading all appliances in to the scrap metal bin.
- Assist in site grounds maintenance.
- Report any vandalism, mechanical difficulties or damage to equipment and facilities.
- Log in and out of security systems on a daily basis.
- Maintain ongoing communication with all SWS staff to ensure bins are filled efficiently while also maintaining smooth and safe traffic flow.
- Provide traffic control at tipping face and around bins to ensure safe site operations for all users, including awareness of various types of vehicles, trailers and equipment movements.
- Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times (high visibility vest, work gloves, and safety boots) as well as eye protection and hearing protection when required.
- Maintain and monitor the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Depot, ensuring that all hazardous materials are safely received and stored and all Health and Safety policies and procedures are adhered to.
- Keep the HHW depots swept and organized, ensuring that there are no trip hazards or other hazards present.
- Sign off on waste manifests, ensuring that all required paperwork is complete and accurate.
- Assist Site Attendant in monitoring site supply inventory so that order forms are sent in a timely manner.
- Fill out appropriate Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) documentation.
- Maintain the Reuse Centre (if applicable), ensuring items are labelled and tracked and that the building is swept and tidy.
- Provide user-pay bags, blue boxes, green bins and composters for customers and charge appropriate fees.
- Comply with County of Wellington Environmental Compliance Approvals and MECP regulations, policies and procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma.
- Working knowledge of computers.
- Able to perform physically demanding work (able to lift 50lbs regularly).
- Willing to work in inclement weather as required in both extreme heat and cold conditions.
- Customer service, cash handling or site maintenance experience preferred.
- Experience in waste management is considered an asset.
- Ability to deal effectively with the public.
- A valid driver’s license (minimum G2 Class) and a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
Pay Range: $27.65 - $32.34 (2026 Non-Union Compensation Grid)
Benefits: Extended Health Care, Emergency Travel Assistance and Dental Care; optional enrollment, premiums cost shared at 70% employer and 30% employee.
Pension: As a non-full-time (NFT) employee of an OMERS employer, you are eligible to elect to join the OMERS Pension Plan at any time. Enrollment in OMERS is voluntary.
Medical Responsibility Time: Accrues at the rate of four days maximum per year.
Vacation: Paid out on each pay at the rate of six percent; increases based on length of service.
Mileage: If applicable, as per CRA allowances.
