BASIC FUNCTION

The Maintenance Worker - Home will represent Wellington Terrace at all times by ensuring adherence to the Code of Conduct and demonstrating the County of Wellington’s commitment to a healthy and safe workplace where every person is respected. The Maintenance Worker reports to the Environmental Services Manager. The position is responsible for providing building and mechanical maintenance, renovation, and repair services within the Wellington Terrace building.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the guidance of the Environmental Services Manager, the Maintenance Worker has the following duties and responsibilities: Applies the fundamental principle of the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 in the operation of the home.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and monitoring of complex heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems including computerized building automation systems (BAS), Carrier variable volume and temperature control systems (VVT), computerized HVAC and domestic water treatment systems, heating/ hot water boilers and exhaust systems.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs as required including, but not limited, to plumbing, minor electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and general repairs.
  • Responds to work orders for maintenance requests from staff and residents in a timely and professional manner using the MaintenanceCare programme.
  • Contacts service contractors as required for repairs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge, understanding, and maintenance of specialty equipment related to Nursing, Nutrition and Environmental Services.
  • Assist with resident room changes, including the moving of specialized lift equipment and medical beds and conducting required safety checks.
  • Safely uses and operates heavy equipment to maintain grounds and remove snow and ice from walkways.
  • Maintains the mechanical room, maintenance shop, and other maintenance areas in a clean, organized, and safe manner.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of all fire and security systems.
  • Collects and disposes of garbage and sustains the on-going waste diversion programme.
  • Receives and stores incoming supplies as required.
  • Sets up for resident programmes and staff meetings.
  • Responds to after-hours emergency calls according to on call rotation.
  • Responds to emergency fan-out when initiated.
  • Other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year college certificate in building science, building construction, general building maintenance or a related field.
  • Enrolment in or completion of Building Environmental Systems certificate programme preferred.
  • Minimum three years of experience or equivalent in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), or general repair work, and knowledge of applicable legislation and safety practices.
  • Computer skills required in Microsoft Office, Building Automation Software and databases.
  • Ability to problem solve or to contact appropriate contractors as necessary.
  • Participation in the Wellington Terrace On-Call Rotation, as scheduled, including reporting to the job site as required.
  • A valid driver’s licence (minimum G2 Class) and a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check required upon hire.

Pay Range: $32.85 - $38.42 (2026 Non-Union Compensation Grid)

Pension: Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS); enrolment mandatory.
Medical Responsibility Time: Prorated and accrues at 0.5 days/month.  Short Term Disability: 17 weeks coverage at 75% or 100% of pay, based on length of service.
