BASIC FUNCTION

The Graphic Designer position is accountable to the Communications Manager, and is responsible for supporting the internal and external communications needs of County Council and all departments at the County of Wellington.  The Graphic Designer provides graphic design, photography and administrative support to the Communications Manager.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assisting with the updating/designing/writing, brochures, flyers, fact sheets, displays, presentations, newspaper advertisements, promotional signs, etc. for various County departments.
  • Providing input and assisting with researching, conceptualizing, and designing materials for various departments.
  • Photographer for the County.  Responsible for coordinating, setting up professional photo shoots and obtaining photo release forms for use in publications, advertising, and website.
  • Ability to colour correct and alter photos as required.
  • Sourcing and purchasing appropriate stock photography for communications material.
  • Responsible for updating the Communications section of the County’s website.
  • Participating in developing the Communications budget.  
  • Maintain stock photos and County photos on Crowdriff platform for design work.
  • Performing research as necessary for projects.
  • Providing assistance to other County departments with respect to corporate communications.
  • Responsible for updating the Communications section of the County’s website as required.
  • Proof read all creative material (before sending it to the Communications Manager for final review) to ensure pieces meet County style guidelines and AODA compliance.
  • Coordinate printing and delivery for all communications projects (internal and external).
  • Social media alternate as required.
  • Learn and maintain new software (e.g. Crowdriff and Constant Contact).
  • Act as an alternate Emergency Management Scribe for the Communications Manager/Emergency Information Officer, duties outlined in the County’s Emergency Response Plan.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three-year college diploma in Graphic Design.
  • Minimum of four years of experience or equivalent in the graphic arts field with demonstrable progressive responsibility.
  • Knowledge of typefaces and demonstrated ability to use type in a creative context.
  • Demonstrated project experience such as setting print specifications, properly preparing files for print, approving printers' proofs, and bringing projects in to meet deadlines and budgets.
  • Experience with photo shoots: coordinating, setting up lighting etc., and taking professional photos for use in publications, advertising, websites, etc. Must have experience correcting and altering photos as required.
  • Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop (operating in a Mac and PC environment).
  • Capacity for web design: preparing artwork, and updating website visuals, as required.
  • Ability to stay current with standards in the design and computer technology fields.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet demanding timelines.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, with peers and outside organizations.
  • Office experience demonstrated ability to develop communications products, and/or understanding of municipal government would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work independently, creatively, and be self-motivated.
  • Excellent computer skills in a Windows environment with proficiency/knowledge of MS Office.
  • A valid driver’s licence (minimum G2 Class) and access to a reliable vehicle; flexibility of location is required. 

Pay Range: $75,075.00 - $87,833.20 (2026 Non-Union Compensation Grid)

Pension: As a non-full-time (NFT) employee of an OMERS employer, you are eligible to elect to join the OMERS Pension Plan at any time. Enrollment in OMERS is voluntary.

Vacation: Accrues to start at three weeks/annum; increases based on length of service.
Parking: Provided; taxable benefit provisions apply.
