BASIC FUNCTION

The function of the Truck and Coach Technician is to provide trouble shooting, repair and maintenance expertise to the Roads Division in order to maintain the good order of the County’s fleet of vehicles, light and heavy equipment, snowplows and hand tools.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Diagnose causes of equipment breakdowns or poor performance.
  • Identify defects requiring repair.
  • Carry out general and emergency repairs to a variety of vehicles, light and heavy equipment, snowplows, and power tools.  Most repairs will be carried out in the shop but some roadside repairs are also required.
  • Perform safety inspections for vehicles/trucks and equipment in accordance with Ministry of Transportation and County of Wellington requirements.
  • Perform regularly scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance.
  • Road test vehicles and equipment as required.
  • Notify the Fleet Supervisor of any schedule concerns and identify any repair items that may be covered under warranty.
  • Maintain a clean, tidy, safe, friendly and supportive work environment.
  • Inform Equipment Operators on the operating functions of various County equipment.
  • Participate in on-call rotation during the winter season.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of Truck and Coach Technician-310T College Apprenticeship Programme; 310T Truck and Coach Licence required.
  • 310S Automotive Licence and other related technical training considered an asset.
  • Minimum five years of experience or equivalent as a mechanic working with light vehicles, heavy trucks and equipment. 
  • Possess a comprehensive working knowledge of the repair, maintenance and operation of a variety of light and heavy trucks, snowplows, and agricultural and construction equipment, related hydraulic systems, salters, electronic control devices, snowplow equipment, fuel systems, brake systems, tires, suspension, alignment, emissions, air conditioning systems, welding, small engines, etc. 
  • Able to supply own complement of good quality and safe mechanics’ hand tools.
  • Working knowledge of all Occupational Health and Safety, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System regulations.
  • Possess First Aid Training.
  • A valid driver’s licence Class D with Z endorsement and a satisfactory driver’s abstract.

Pay Range: $74,006.40 - $86,590.40 (2025 Non-Union Compensation Grid)

Medical Responsibility Time: Prorated and accrues at 0.5 days/month.  Short Term Disability: 17 weeks coverage at 75% or 100% of pay, based on length of service.
Vacation: Accrues to start at three weeks/annum; increases based on length of service.
